NBA Draft 2019 lottery results: Pelicans secure No. 1 pick; Lakers jump up to No. 4

Sporting News — (Alexis Mansanarez)

Zion Williamson, the projected No. 1 pick in this year's draft, could find a new home in New Orleans.

The Pelicans (33-49) secured the top pick in Tuesday's NBA Draft lottery. The Grizzlies (33-49) will select second.

It is only the second time in franchise history New Orleans will select first. The Pelicans had just a 6% chance to secure the pick.

It left Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry pretty excited.

This was the first year that the league's three worst teams in New York, Cleveland and Phoenix all had an equal chance (14%) to land the No. 1 overall pick. In past years the breakdown looked more like 25%, 19.9% and 15.6%.

But now with the new setup, madness ensued.

The Suns dropped to No. 6 and the Cavaliers to No. 5 while the Knicks will select third. All the while, the Lakers — who had only a 2% chance at the top selection — moved up to No. 4.

Williamson is all but assured the No. 1 pick after his freshman season at Duke. Fellow Blue Devil RJ Barrett and Murray State star Ja Morant, who has been compared to the likes of Russell Westbrook, are also projected to be top selections.
