USC's Gustin undergoes toe surgery, doubtful for Texas contestSeptember 14, 2017 3:53am

USC's defense likely won't be at full strength Saturday against Texas as linebacker Porter Gustin underwent surgery for a small crack in his toe and is doubtful to play.

"It will be based on the doctors' opinion and the pain of Porter and what he goes through and what he can take, whether he can play or not," head coach Clay Helton told Zach Helfand of the Los Angeles Times. "It's day to day. Porter's a tough kid. I don't know if it's too late for him to play in this game or not. I think he'll be definitely ready for next week but he'll be very close this week."

Helton said Gustin wants to play Saturday against the Longhorns, but the team is taking a cautious approach. The talented linebacker led USC in tackles for loss last season and is a beast in the run game.

Should Gustin miss the contest, Connor Murphy will likely slide into his position on the starting unit.
